SMA24: Editorial Award for “Letters in Pictures”!

Exciting news! I won an editorial department award from Japanese publisher Coamix, who hosts a silent manga competition called the “Silent Manga Audition” (SMA). This competition has been running for a long time, and SMA24’s theme was “Letters”.

My story “Letters in Pictures” didn’t win a cash prize, but it won an SMA Editorial Department Award, which is a recognition of excellence from the editors.

The comments of Editor Motoda was very kind: “It really made my heart flutter that what brought the two characters together was not words, but the things they liked. From the drawings, I could tell that the two characters had been thinking about each other, not just on the train, but in their everyday life. I also liked the wall filled with pictures of the two of them on the last page. Overall, I really enjoyed this piece!

I’m considering entering SMA25, which has the theme “A Kind Heart”. Great practice for short stories, especially since it’s only supposed to be 6-17 pages long!

Manga Workshop for FCBD

I’m doing a manga workshop for FCBD at Manly Library, which is at 1 Market Place, Manly. It’s on the 6th May @ 1-2pm, so drop by if you’re free that day.

I used a video I did to post the announcement. It’s actually a Clip Studio screen recording, which when sped up and drawn in a certain way, looks like limited animation. It took a bit of planning, like the previous video with the girl in kimono I posted.

“Beating the Loneliness Monster” – Part 3 in Youkie Magazine

Part 3 of “Beating the Loneliness Monster” is in Youkie Magazine‘s April 2023 issue, which is co-written with niece Kelly Tao. The final issue of Part 4 will be out in the July 2023 issue. Meanwhile, this issue also has a 6-page short story by my good friend Julie Ditrich (Writer) and Angie Spice (Artist) called “Fade”, which is a fantastic look at girls who get too drained when they are too much of a people pleaser.

I recently had a go at screen recording my art in Clip Studio Paint, and discovered that you can do some fun animation stuff with it. A lot of work, but fun to play with.
