The Australian comics, graphic novel, and manga scene is a diverse one. Unlike the more established prose fiction sector, self-publishing is quite common in the comics space due to cost—especially in Australia, where even large publishers can rarely afford to produce more than two graphic novels a year.
As visual literature grows in prominence and cultural value, many works have received recognition through awards, both local and international. Since it can be difficult for booksellers and libraries to keep track of awards specific to graphic novels, I’ve attempted to collect them here in an easy-to-peruse format.
This list focuses on comics and manga created by Australians that are suitable for kids and teens, and have been vetted by governments, libraries, or award committees, including:
- Australia Library & Information Association (ALIA) Graphics Group (they list monthly releases, and have a yearly “Graphic Notables” list for Australian comics)
- Comic Arts Awards of Australia (former the Ledger Awards)
- NSW Premier Reading Challenge Lists
- Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards
- Any number of international literary awards, including US ones such as the Harvey Awards, or Eisner Awards
This list will be updated regularly whenever an Australian work suitable for kids and teens wins an award.
