Workshops & Tutoring

Looking for a comics-related workshop for your library, school, or event? I’m available to do drawing classes for ages 8-12, and for teens & up. For places that are too remote for me to personally travel to, I am available to do online workshops via zoom or skype.

My workshops are mostly for beginner artists, as I advise more advanced artists to take private tutoring. My primary focus is teaching character construction for manga/comics, story structure for manga and comic strips, general manga/comic creation, and using new technology and software to facilitate art.

Scope

I do workshops for about drawing and writing comics, character design, introduction to animation and drawing backgrounds. I can tailor a workshop to meet the specific needs of a group or a person, and I also do private 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. I’m available for panels, discussions, and Q&A roundtables at festivals. I have also chaired these events, so am available to act as moderator.

I enjoy teaching people how to draw, and welcome students of all ages and persuasions. My intention is to teach people that words and pictures are symbiotic in human communication, and that in many cases pictures can communicate much more than words–and how that effect is achieved.

Please contact me for more details if you’re interested. Here are a list of events/workshops I’ve been a part of over the years.

Quotes

The students at St John Paul II Catholic College absolutely loved being a part of Queenie Chan’s workshop. The drawing techniques and access to a professional artist was invaluable with students beaming with the new skills they learnt. Having Queenie also judge their skills in our school manga contest propelled students to research, practice their writing alongside illustration and utilise their recess and lunch in new ways. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Queenie for a school or group workshop. Her knowledge and kind heart was a pleasure to experience.

Some really lovely feedback has been coming through from the kids. They really enjoyed it! Will definitely get back in contact for future workshops.

– Emma Suyasa, Children’s Librarian at Inner West Library

Lots of intensive drawing going on here! Our students are loving this, thank you! Learning a lot watching you draw Queenie!

– Judith Ridge, Teacher at Zoom workshop hosted by Doncaster Library

Asking Queenie to run a workshop on ‘How to Draw a Comic for Beginners‘ was one of the most fun and well attended online events we have run all year. In a time where there are a lot of zoom workshops and seminars, this offered something a little different and I got to walk away with a comic I drew myself!

– Caroline Crawford, Organiser of PopFest at University of Sydney

Please let Queenie know that the workshop was really well done! Queenie’s breakdown and explanations were very easy to understand and follow, and her art work was incredible even when it was just a few lines being drawn on the page lol!
