Fabled Kingdom – Characters

Here are a list of characters that appear in Fabled Kingdom, and my notes on some of them. I’m keeping this spoiler-free as much as possible, so it’s going to be a simple introduction to these characters rather than something more in-depth.

character-celsiaCelsia Penny (Pendraig)

A seemingly-nice girl with a red hood goes on a fantastic adventure, or at least that’s how Celsia begins her story. She’s a young healer training under her grandmother in Hempshire, which is a small village at the base of the Southern Ranges of Fableton. Her family life is very female-oriented, with her merchant stepmother and her village healer grandmother dominating. Luckily for Celsia, despite being fatherless, she was raised by strong-minded adults who have their heads screwed on straight.

Celsia is kind and well-meaning, though I draw the line at calling her ‘nice.’ I think a better word for her is expedient – someone who knows how to say the right things in the right circumstances, which I think is a valuable soft skill. Anyway, she handles all the weirdness in her journey rather well, and can be rather fascinated by power, money and the trappings of royalty. All quite normal, at least for someone who has read a lot about the world, but has limited exposure to it.

character-breeBree Whitoak

It’s nice to see a stepmother who is a happy, jovial person, and who bonds very well with her stepdaughter. Bree is a very practical and talented merchant, who runs a trading post called “The Trading Oak” in a town to the east of Hempshire. Being quite independent, she’s raised Celsia to be that way, and is constantly traveling around so she can look for business opportunities. Despite being quite money-focused, she still puts her family first no matter what.

Bree has seen a lot more of the world than she lets on, and has a very no-nonsense attitude, especially towards people or concepts she doesn’t approve of. She has a low tolerance for anything magical or mystical – she just doesn’t like “that sort of thing” and thinks it’s all trouble. Given her experiences, she’s not wrong.

character-lefreniaLefrenia Penny

Lefrenia is Celsia’s grandmother, or so Celsia has believed all along. She’s a rather calm, quiet woman who is constantly busy, so despite her advanced age, she’s still quite strong and healthy. Lefrenia is a great help to the villages she acts as the local healer for, but she would also rather keep her own company. Being no great fan of village gatherings or just people in general, she tends to avoid being in the center of village life, to the intense disappointment of some of the village elders.

Lefrenia has her own agenda in this story, which won’t be revealed until much later on. Being the mystical sort, it’s a wonder that she gets along with Bree as well as she does. The truth is, both women have devoted themselves to raising Celsia properly, and so are willing to set aside their differences to create a united front as stepmother and grandmother to their only child.

character-quillonQuillon Drake

Quillon is Celsia’s long-time childhood friend, and the only other same-age boy living in her village. The Drakes are the largest landowners in Hempshire, and their patriarch is the village Elder, who has gone into business with Bree by running the village store. Quillon doesn’t share any of his grandfather’s entrepreneurial flare, however. He’s a hunter who is one with nature, and gets along extremely well with Lefrenia, since he has the habit of spending days in the woods, hunting and practising his archery. This would be considered strange by many, but Quillon is an amazing archer who is handsome in a wholesome way, and he knows it. People overlook a lot of things when you’re this wholesome-seeming.

Truth is, Quillon dislikes people almost as much as Lefrenia does. While he does a good job of hiding it, sometimes he just gets moody and resentful when forced to hang around civilisation too much. This is something that Celsia can never understand, but she doesn’t try to either – rather, she thinks her role is to support him and defend him in all his choices. This means she can often be on the receiving end of his silent treatment when he’s moody, but she gets over it because Quillon eventually snaps out of it. He’s not a natural curmudgeon.

character-pylusPylus

Speaking of wholesomeness, here is a wholesome character who does his best to cultivate the opposite of a wholesome image. Pylus is a faun, and the first ‘person’ Celsia encounters when she is forced to leave her village. Her first impression of him aren’t good – but then most people, fauns included, think Pylus is rather odd-looking. It’s his wild, crazy hair – as the son of a Willow tree nymph, there’s little he can do about it. Pylus is fully aware of his effect on people, humans especially, and sometimes, he revels in their reaction and likes to provoke them. Mostly, though, he just doesn’t really care about their reactions.

Pylus takes to his role of provocateur rather well, but underneath all of that, Pylus is a pretty sweet and perhaps even insecure guy. He takes an instant liking to Celsia when he first meets her, which wasn’t returned, but then he’s used to being rebuked by human girls. He’s fueled more by curiosity than sexual interest, though he does his best to pretend otherwise. All-in-all, Pylus and Celsia develop a very strong bond and a trusting relationship that probably neither of them realise the depth of…yet.

character-briarroseBriar Rose Pendraig

Briar Rose is Celsia’s young grandmother, and the queen of Fallinor. She warms to Celsia rather quickly, and appears quite kind in the way she welcomes her granddaughter to the castle. Of course, being a queen who is the last of her line, she is more than fiercely protective of her heritage and her kingdom. The thought of her missing son and a possible imposter pretending to be her granddaughter is something that must keep her up at night.

Briar Rose is an only child who grew up for want of nothing, and being queen has only made her even more demanding and entitled. She can be very girlish and charming, but she can also turn on a dime. Being a more militarily-inclined queen, she has a great love of swords, armour and attack magic, and is more than a match for the soldiers she trains in her castle. Despite this, she remains very feminine and image conscious. She doesn’t quite appreciate it when her granddaughter accidently steals the limelight from her.
