Answers to FAQs
Q:
Did you have your script read by a professional editor before you had it sent to TOKYOPOP?
A:
No. When I submitted, I put together a submission, spell-checked and proof-read it myself, and then sent it off to TOKYOPOP. Never at any stage did I get a professional editor to check anything, and even now, no one else I know has. I don’t feel there is a real need to to go beyond spelling and grammar-checking, because if TOKYOPOP is interested in working with you, you’ll be contacted by an editor from the company. The editor, before the official “pitching” process begins, will give you tips and guidance on how to shape and improve your story. In other words, the product you submit need not be perfect. In fact, it would probably be better if you left a bit of leeway for changes and suggestions.
So unless you have time and money to spare, hiring a professional editor may not necessarily give you any advantages in the pitching process. It may help your scripting and writing in the long run, but in terms of getting a contract, it’s probably irrelevant.
